BEST® Dysphagia Management Services

The Bedside Endoscopic Swallowing Test (BEST®) is a comprehensive on-site swallowing evaluation, performed by a clinically privileged Speech and Language Pathologist, for the purpose of identifying risk factors associated with swallowing disorders (dysphagia).

The BEST begins with an evaluation of the patient’s dysphagia thorough chart review; patient and family interview; oral mechanism examination; and review of the physician’s note and any previous SLP therapy care plan. During the test, the use of fiberoptic endoscopic instrumentation allows for evaluation of the function of the swallowing mechanism by viewing the throat during the swallow.

The purpose of the BEST evaluation is the comprehensive evaluation of the pharyngeal stage of swallowing leading to recommendations regarding the safety of the swallow, advisability of oral feeding, and the use of appropriate interventions that facilitate safe and efficient swallowing. Cognitive function is evaluated in order to assess the patient’s ability to modify diet independently, comply with compensatory strategies, and care for oneself to reduce risk of complications.  A report is generated on-site for immediate access to dysphagia management recommendations.

BEST Dysphagia Management Services strives to improve the comfort, care, and quality of life for those patients suffering from health complications due to swallowing problems (dysphagia).
